1/Lt. Ernest Marcy reported: "I believe that I am the last one to have seen Lt. Winter. At approximately 1140, 15 miles west of Kiel, Germany, our squadron was bounced by about 20 plus enemy aircraft.  We started into a lufbery and I spun out of a sharp climbing turn.  Lt. Winter was on my wing before this spin.  At the top of the sharp climbing turn we were attacked by the 109s at which point I last saw Lt. Winter, my wingman.  I spun out of a sharp climbing turn, lost sight of Lt. Winter and did not see him again."

Lt. Winter is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Ft. Myers, Virginia.
