17 December 1944 - Joined the 38th Fighter Squadron as a Flight Officer
22 March 1945 - Lt. O'Neil was escorting B-24s of the 2nd Air Division, target Schwabisch Hall Airdrome, and after escort duties the unit hit the deck to strafe. Lt. O'Neil's plane was hit by flak and crashed and exploded while strafing Lechfeld Airdrome, Germany.  He is buried at Lorraine American Military Cemetery and Memorial, Saint Avold, France.  He was from New Jersey.
