Lt. Lawrence was making a formation take-off, as a wingman, on a combat mission.  As his leader started a left turn at 30 to 50 feet above the ground, Lt. Lawrence got into a position where he was in the flight leader's prop wash.  His aircraft moved down and out of the prop wash, but his left wing hit the top of a tree and the plane turned over and crashed.  The aircraft was destroyed and Lt. Lawrence was killed instantly.

Lt. Lawrence is buried at Cambridge American Military Cemetery and Memorial, Coton, Cambridge, England.
