Notes Lt. Goethel  bailed out of his aeroplane, on 11 June 1944, after air battle with Me-109s.  Lt. Goethel evaded capture and returned to Wormingford on 1 September 1944.

On 12 September 1944 Lt Goethel was killed on a local flight in a high speed dive.
Lt. Goethel is buried at the Cambridge American Military Cemetery, Coton, Cambridge, England..
Memories When Lt. Goethel was interrogated upon return to England on 30 August, he said:
"My elevators and aileron controls were gone and flying shrapnel came into the cockpit.  I had a bullet hole in my head. Bailed out at 5,000 feet and delayed opening chute to 500 feet.  Aircraft exploded upon striking the ground."
