| Notes | Lt. Goethel bailed out of his aeroplane, on 11 June
1944, after air battle with Me-109s. Lt. Goethel evaded capture and
returned to Wormingford on 1 September 1944. MACR No. 05573 On 12 September 1944 Lt Goethel was killed on a local flight in a high speed dive. Lt. Goethel is buried at the Cambridge American Military Cemetery, Coton, Cambridge, England.. |
| Memories | When Lt. Goethel was interrogated upon return to England
on 30 August, he said: "My elevators and aileron controls were gone and flying shrapnel came into the cockpit. I had a bullet hole in my head. Bailed out at 5,000 feet and delayed opening chute to 500 feet. Aircraft exploded upon striking the ground." |
