Lt. Brokaw was on a Fighter Sweep over France.  He reported a coolant leak, then sparks and then a fire.  He was down to approximately 14,000 ft. when he popped the canopy, rolled inverted and then Split 'Ess'd.  He pulled out at about 2,000 feet but his aircraft crashed and burned.  It was thought that he must have rolled the trim wheel the wrong way when trying to bail out.
Lt. Brokaw is buried at Epinal American Military Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Vosages, France.
