MACR No. 01271 Lt. Stephens was killed by enemy fighters near Bremen, Germany. Capt. Chariles O. Jones, his flight leader, reported: "The last time I saw Lt. Stephens was after leaving the target area, when I broke into an attack of Me-109s. I noticed that Lt. Stephens, who was number 4 in my flight, was being attacked by a Me-109. I called to him on the R/T to, 'Break, Steve, break', but he didn't seem to hear me, for he took very little evasive action. I then turned to attack the Me-109 which was attacking him, and I didn't see him after that." Lt. Stephens is buried at Plot B, Row 8, Grave 1, in the Ardennes American Military Cemetery and
Memorial, Neupre, Belgium. He was from Missouri. |
