As the 338th FS prepared for an April mission, Capt. William McGill was taxiing when another P-51 accidentally collided with him, chopping the aircraft in two.
Just two weeks later, on 3 May 1945, lightning struck twice as McGill was again hit from behind and killed by another P-51.  He was the 55th Group's last wartime casualty.
