MACR No. 06847
2/Lt. George E. Funk reported: "I was flying Acorn Yellow 4. Lt. Stoddard B. Gerald was flying Acorn Blue 2.  We had left Caen and were flying a heading of 100 degrees when I observed heavy flak.  I started evasive action and called the flak in over the R/T as I did so.  Just at this time my aircraft was hit in the tail section.  As I levelled out I saw Lt. Gerald's ship which had been hit in the tail section, wing, and engine, the latter being on fire.  The plane went into a dive and shortly thereafter I saw Lt. Gerald's chute open.  The location was 49 degrees 10 minutes North, 0 degrees 05 minutes East."
Lt. Gerald was downed near Caen, France, taken prisoner and after interrogation at Oberursel, sent to Stalag Luft III, Sagan.
