PILOT'S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT
A. Combat.
B. 10 September 1944.
C. 343rd Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.
D. 1230.
E. Vicinity of Schwabmunchen, Germany.
F. CAVU.
G. Hs 126.
H. One (1) Hs 126 Destroyed.
I. We were flying as Tudor Yellow Leader and Yellow 2. After escorting the
bombers through the target, we dropped down about 15,000 feet looking for e/a on
airfields. We made a pass at one field on which Tudor Yellow 3 destroyed
an Me 109. Then we stayed on the deck strafing various military targets.
Lt. Leslie, Yellow 2, called out one lone e/a flying low over the small town of
Schwabmunchen. We immediately banked left into him, and as we were
starting to pull a lead on him, he evidently became scared for he immediately
made a steep bank, catching his wing in a tree. This pulled him into the
ground and he disintegrated. Neither Yellow Leader nor Yellow 2 fired a
shot until after he hit the ground, then we strafed the spot where he crashed.
The e/a was a Hs 126 heading from west to east. The rest of Tudor Yellow
flight also strafed the spot where he went in. One Hs 126 is claimed as
destroyed by Yellow Leader and Yellow 2 shared.
