I. We made rendezvous with our big friends about three minutes past Stuttgart. A lone Me 109 came over the bombers, half-rolled and went through their formation, apparently inflicting no damage. Immediately after an Me 410 started drawing contrails and a section of P-38's started after him. Still climbing, he started towards the Alps. We were slowly closing with him when he broke right, then changing his mind, broke left. Major Shipman opened on him and we swung through to intercept him, should he continue his turn. Captain Leinweber took top cover, I managed to get a forty five degree deflection shot but immediately afterward my ship hit compressibility and I had to fight it back to join Captain Leinweber. This was accomplished practically on instruments as my windscreen was all but obscured by gun smoke, grease and fog from the gun heat.
