PILOT'S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT
B. 24 February 1944.
C. 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.
E. Vicinity of Gotha.
F. Low haze, no clouds.
G. Me 109.
I. I was flying number two position in Swindle Blue flight at an altitude of 27,000 feet in the vicinity of the target. We were bounced by four Me 109's and broke left and up. At an altitude of around 30,000 feet, my flight leader was bounced and fired upon by number three man of a four ship flight of Me 109's. I followed my leader down around 5000 thousand (sic) feet and I shot a two second burst at the enemy aircraft after he finished, at a range of 500 to 600 yards, not over ten degrees astern, and used one ring sight lead. I observed no strikes. I hit compressibility very badly and had trouble pulling out, but stayed with flight leader.
