PILOT'S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT
B. 24 February, 1944.
C. 343rd Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.
E. 5 to 10 miles out of Gotha.
G. Fw 190.
H. One (1) Fw 190 Damaged.
I. Flying as Careful Leader (two flights) we made R/V, and while the remainder of the Group flew south and climbed to meet 20 plus E/A, I took our flights down to sweep a few E/A away from the bombers. While weaving the flights over the bombers, eight 190's weaved over us, preventing us from following any E/A closely One 190 came down and got on No. 4 in Red flight, coming to within 150 yards and firing. I turned my flight and [illegible] at the E/A, firing at a 20 degree head-on attack. He broke off his attack and went down to the left, smoking slightly.
