PILOT'S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT
B. 5 January 1944
C. 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.
E. 10 miles south west of Kiel
H. Damaged, one (1) Me109
I. As we neared target at about 29,000 feet from the north, contrails from enemy aircraft could be seen to the south, at an altitude of about 33,000 ft. Six Me210’s passed 1000 feet below us going north, but a formation of 25 plus Me109’s attacked from the left and above. Immediately we went into a double Luftberry. I was wingman to Major Shipman leading Swindle White Flight. Lt. Steiner and Capt. Beaird comprising the second element. During this movement Maj. Shipman and I both fired on a Me109, hits observed on right wing near fuselage. Someone behind called for help, so Maj. Shipman led the flight in a 360 degree turn; picked up a P38 in trouble and came on home.
