PILOT'S PERSONAL ENCOUNTER REPORT
B. 5 January 1944
C. 38th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group.
E. 10-15 miles South West of Kiel
H. None observed
I. I was leading element to Lt. Wyche’s Swindle Green Flight. We turned into 20 plus e/a and went into Lufberry. I couldn’t drop belly tanks and was unable to turn with rest of group. I buffeted out of Lufberry and noticed 2 Me109’s attacking P38. I observed P38 going down with one engine wind milling. I fired on these e/a. then broke right with 2 e/a on my tail. I turned into a tight left turn buffeting badly because of belly tanks and they were firing at me from about 300 yards. A flight of four P38’s dove onto the 2 e/a and then these 2 left me. I then joined up with the group and after many attempts shook belly tanks loose.
I was unable to observe any hits on the 2 e/a I attacked, but was in very good position astern and little above and about 150 to 200 yards; they were of light grey or blue camouflage.
