I. I was number two man in Swindle Yellow (sic) flight led by Lt. Leve. We were
at 23,000 ft. covering box of B-17's at 18000 feet, on bombing run, when Lt.
Leve observed a lone e/a attacking box from dead astern. An attack was
ordered by Lt. Leve. The e/a saw us coming and broke sharply to the right
and rolled over on his back, passing directly under us. I was unable to
get sufficient lead and saw no hits as I let a burst go at 80 degree deflection
and 150 yards. We broke off and pulled up and the e/a split s'd for the
deck.
